The prize-money is adapted percentagewise according to the total number of participants paying entry fee (open).

The prize-money is not cumulative,
except for the youth prizes.
Additional Prizes:

• The chess club participating with the highest number of main club members, is granted € 100 (excepting KGSRL).
• The team of which 5 main club players obtain the highest number of points, receives € 100. The second team, € 50.
• The winner of the chess problem competition is awarded € 25.
• Each round, the player scoring the best Elo performance receives a bottle of Cava (max. 1 bottle pro player).
• Lightning chess competition (depending on the number of participants).
LODGING
ACCOMMODATION > EASILY ACCESSIBLE AND FREE PARKING
We provide accommodation in the Don Bosco boarding school in Sint-Denijs-Westrem, where we offer you 60 rooms. This accommodation is very easily accessible by tram line 1, with stops near the Kortrijksesteenweg (close to the tournament hall) and the boarding school (stop Gent Maria Middelares - Maalte). A pedestrian tunnel under the road connects the stop with the boarding school to make things as easy as possible for you. Click on venue in the menu for further information.

For those who book and pay for an accommodation before 11/07/22 and come to the tournament by car, the accommodation in Don Bosco Sint-Denijs-Westrem has a private parking. During the day you can also use a ride card for tram line 1. This ticket is offered you free of charge by the organization.

We have 2 floors with 30 rooms each. Each room has a bed, cupboards, washbasin and desk. In the middle of the corridor, a sufficient number of individual showers and toilets remain at your disposal. There are also sitting areas with vending machines with soft drinks.
Don Bosco Sint-Denijs-Westrem is situated on the city’s edge, enclosed by the R4 (motorway around Ghent), the Kortrijksesteenweg and Zwijnaarde. Yet the accessibility of the boarding school is excellent: tram 1 comes from Kortrijksesteenweg (close to the tournament hall) via the Sint-Pietersstation and takes 10 minutes to reach the boarding school. In addition, buses 76, 77, 78 from De Lijn also have a stop at the school. The proximity of motorways exits, the R4 and the Kortrijksesteenweg makes it easy for motorists to reach the school. The price for a single room breakfast included is € 45/night. One additional night is charged as warranty. A 4-night stay (Wednesday, Thursday, Saturday, Sunday night) in the Don Bosco Sint-Denijs Westrem boarding school will consequently cost you € 225, including a € 45 warranty, which will be refunded in case the room is returned in a proper condition.

The beds are provided with mattress protectors, pillows, sheets and blankets.

All reserved rooms have to be paid within 10 days of reservation! Reservations can be made till
11/07/2022 (subject to availability).

The reservation of a room is only considered final when the required amount due to the rent of the room is received. The accommodation will be confirmed by e-mail when we receive the amount due.

I ordered a room in Don Bosco. What is the procedure?
The reservation of a room is only considered final when the required amount due for the rent of the room is received. Payment to the account number of KGSRL: BIC KREDBEBB - IBAN BE48 7374 2629 4027. Please clearly state the names of all players you are paying for. The accommodation will be confirmed by e-mail when we receive the amount due.

Each player who reserves a room should present himself in the tournament hall as well as in the boarding school Don Bosco. This is very important! Players who only register themselves in the boarding school will not be registered for the tournament and will not be paired for the first round. Players who only show up in the tournament hall may lose their room booked after 13.00 h. Both registrations ought to take place before 13.00 h.
 
What is included in my stay?
A daily breakfast buffet is included in the price (Thursday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday morning). The rooms come with beds and mattress protectors, sheets, blankets and pillows. There are sufficient individual sanitary facilities on the corridors, a wash-basin is available in the rooms.
 
Why do I need to pay a warranty?
The warranty is also a protection against the loss of keys and will be returned when the room is left in clean condition.
 
Can I lengthen my stay at the home?
Yes, but it is only possible to come one day earlier (on Tuesday 19 July, from 18.00 h) or stay one more day (Sunday 24 July, rooms need to be vacated on Monday 25 July at 11.00 h). Players who wish to stay longer in Ghent need to find accommodation on their own initiative.

What if I have to cancel my room for some reason and I have already booked and paid?
Paid room reservations cancelled before 01 July 2022 will be fully refunded, cancellations before 10 July will be refunded for 75% and cancellations before 15 July for 50%. After 15/07 cancellations will not be refunded. Any refunds will only be paid back after the tournament. Refunds should be asked for by e-mail.

When do I have to leave my room?
Each player has to leave his room on 24 July before the start of the prize-giving at the latest, unless there is a reservation until Monday morning, then the player has to leave the room before 11.00 h on Monday.

Is there a parking nearby?
The school complex Don Bosco has a sufficient number of parking places. Parking is free of charge and should not be reserved.

I have paid for the room but I did not receive a confirmation e-mail ?
We will confirm your room as soon as we have received the money. Please keep in mind that international money orders can take up to a week. If you have not yet received a confirmation e-mail after more than 10 days, please contact us by e-mail.

I wish to stay in Ghent but not in the University Homes.
The organisation only offers accommodation in Don Bosco for the duration of the tournament, at affordable prices. On the website of the city of Ghent you can find all other accommodation. You will have to take care of this yourself though.
Does the tournament count for your rating?
No, the Ghent Open is not communicated for Elo-treatment. A tournament "scorecard" from the tournament director is not possible.

May I miss a round?
You are allowed to miss up to 2 rounds during the first 5 rounds, receiving half a point per default.
 
How much will the prize money be if there are less than 250 paying participants?
The prize money will be adjusted in terms of percentage according to the number of paying participants. An example: 240 paying participants take part in the open tournament, second prize in the main category will be (1000 euro x 240)250 or 960 euro.
 
Will I have to play against a teammate?
Not during the first rounds, but this is possible later on.
 
When will the pairings for the next day be communicated?
The pairings will be displayed in the tournament hall and may be consulted on our website every night around midnight as well.
 
What happens in case of disputes?
A players’ committee will be established, made up of three players/arbiters chosen randomly. This committee will settle all possible disputes in consultation with the Chief Arbiter.
REGULATIONS

REGULATIONS OPEN TOURNAMENT

 

1. The tournament will be played over 9 rounds according to the Swiss System. To determine the pairings, we first take into account the Fide rating of the player, and after that, his national rating.

 

2. The result forms must be filled out correctly and signed by both players. The winner or the white player in case of a draw deposits the result in the proper box.

 

3. Failure to arrive for a game incurs immediate exclusion unless the player reports personally to the Chief Arbiter while the round is still in progress.

 

4. Incorrect results can be corrected provided they are communica¬ted to the tournament direction at the latest 30 minutes after the start of the next game.

 

5. Games played with the wrong colour have no effect on the subsequent pairings.

 

6. New: In case of players ending with an equal number of points, the prizes will be equally divided. Prizes cannot be cumulated, except for youth players.

 

7. Complaints should be lodged with the Chief Arbiter not later than 30 minutes after the end of the game. The Committee of Arbiters, composed of three arbiters, will take a conclusive decision after hearing all sides involved. The decision taken has no influence whatsoever on the pairings that have already been carried out.

 

8. If possible two players of the same club will not be paired against each other during the first 3 rounds.

 

9. If a player does not want to play a given round he has to fill out a form obtainable at the tournament direction. Up to round 5 included, one may obtain, maximum twice, a 0,5 point for this.

 

10. It is no longer possible to change the number of the club that was given by a player once the first round has started!

 

11. The rate of play is fixed at 90 minutes + 30 seconds increment from move 1 onwards for the whole game.

 

12. The FIDE rules (1 January 2018) for the Chess Game apply unless the following lines tell otherwise.

 

13. Derogating from the FIDE-rules (1 January 2018) the default time is one hour. This delay is considered from the actual starting point of the round (based on the Chief Arbiter’s watch).

 

14. The scoresheet is the property of the organizer.

 

15. Smoking is only allowed in a specific area, reserved for this purpose. This rule should be strictly observed.

  • At the first offense, a warning will be given.
  • The second offense will cause the loss of the game, and the player must leave 't Kuipke - Sportpaleis Gent.
  • At the third offense, the player will be excluded from the tournament and has to leave the tournament at once.

   

16. The Chief Arbiter can, after a duration of play of 4h30, decide to assign a temporary result to a game still in progress, to enable the pairings for the next round.

 

17. The organisation reserves the right to refuse registrations without giving any reason.

 

 

REGULATIONS TOURNAMENT 55+

REGULATIONS QUAD (4 PLAYERS) TOURNAMENT

 

1. The participants in the tournament will be classified based on their FIDE or national rating if no FIDE rating is known for them. If two or more players have an identical rating, the order will be determined based on the order of registration.

 

2. Based on the order of the list of participants, the players will be divided into groups of four (4) players. The organization may change the order to avoid that two or more members of the same club end up in the same group.

 

3. Every quad plays a double round robin tournament (6 rounds in total) according to the Berger system. The starting numbers are hereby determined randomly. The return round will be played in the reverse order of play.

 

4. The most recent known FIDE rules for Rapid chess apply, unless the following lines tell otherwise.

 

5. The rate of play is 45 minutes, with a 15 second increment from move 1.

 

6. Keeping score of the game is not obligatory. However, a player who is not recording his moves, will be unable to claim a draw on the ground of a 3 times repetition of the same position or the 50 moves rule.

 

7. An irregular move or establishing that a mobile phone had not been switched off will be punished as following:

1st offense: a warning will be given

2nd offense during the same game: loss of the game, unless the opponent cannot possibly win the game by any regular set of moves, in which case the game ends in a draw.

 

8. During the game, a player may not walk around carrying his mobile phone with him. If this is established, the game will be declared lost at once.

 

9. In case of tied winners, the final classification will be determined according to the following tie-break rules: 1. Mutual result 2. Sonneborn-Berger 3. Number of black wins. 4. Lottery.

 

10. The result forms must be filled out correctly and signed by both players. The winner or the white player in case of a draw deposits the result in the proper box at the tournament hall.

 

11. Any unjustified failure to arrive for a game incurs immediate exclusion unless the player reports personally to the tournament’s direction table half an hour at the latest before the start of the next round.

 

12. If a player is excluded from the tournament, the results of this player are only taken into account for the final ranking if the player has played a minimum of 3 rounds.

 

13. Complaints lodged against the Arbiter’s final decision not later than 30 minutes after the end of the game, will be decided conclusively by the Committee of Arbiters, composed of three arbiters, after hearing all sides involved.

 

14. Derogating from the FIDE-rules (1 January 2018) the default time is half an hour. This delay is considered from the actual starting point of the round (based on the Chief Arbiter’s watch).

 

15. The organisation reserves the right to refuse registrations without giving any reason. 

 

 

GSM Policy 

 

When it is established that a mobile phone had not been switched off, this will be punished as follows:

1st offense: a warning will be given

2nd offense during the same game: loss of the game, unless the opponent cannot possibly win the game given the position on the board, in which case the game ends in a draw

 

During the game, a player may not walk around carrying his mobile phone with him. If this is established, the game will be declared lost at once
